Most people are surprised to learn that Freeing the Butterfly includes yoga poses (with photos). There is one per chapter and Josie and I included them so there are as many different types of ways to create your own happiness as possible. All the poses in our book are perfect for beginners and you don't even need a mat!
One of the first poses we introduce in the book is thunderbolt pose. Have you ever craved that feeling of being completely safe and grounded, like a sturdy tree with roots reaching deep into the earth? In the whirlwind of our daily lives, finding those moments of stability can feel like a challenge. But what if I told you there's a simple yoga pose that can help you cultivate that sense of security within your own body and mind?
Enter thunderbolt pose, also known as vajrasana in Sanskrit. "Vajra" translates to thunderbolt or diamond, symbolizing its power and indestructibility. Just like a thunderbolt, this pose is all about harnessing your inner strength and resilience. Let's take a deep dive into this grounding pose, exploring its benefits and how you can weave it into your everyday life – even at work!
What is Thunderbolt Pose?
Thunderbolt pose is a kneeling posture where you sit back on your heels with your knees together and the tops of your feet flat on the floor. Your spine is straight, and your hands rest gently on your thighs. It may look simple, but don't be fooled; this pose offers a multitude of benefits for both your body and mind.
In many cultures, thunderbolt pose is associated with meditation and prayer. It's believed to help channel energy and promote a sense of calm and focus. By grounding your body, you create a stable foundation for your mind to settle and find stillness. In Freeing the Butterfly, Josie demonstrates this pose with her hands on her thighs, but you can also have them in prayer position. Whichever is most comfortable for you is best.
How Do You Do Thunderbolt Pose?
Ready to give it a try? Here's a step-by-step breakdown:
- Start by kneeling on your mat (or the floor, if that's comfortable) with your knees hip-width apart.
- Bring your big toes together and sit back on your heels, ensuring that your calves are resting comfortably against the back of your thighs.
- If this feels too intense on your knees or ankles, you can place a blanket or a yoga block under your sitting bones for support.
- Lengthen your spine, drawing your crown towards the ceiling. Relax your shoulders and let your hands rest gently on your thighs, palms facing up or down.
- Close your eyes or soften your gaze and take a few deep breaths, allowing your body to settle into the pose.
The Benefits of Thunderbolt Pose
Let's talk about why this pose is so awesome!
- Physical Benefits: Thunderbolt Pose helps improve digestion, strengthens your ankles and knees, and stretches your thighs and hips. It can also help alleviate lower back pain and improve your posture.
- Mental and Emotional Benefits: This pose is like a warm hug for your nervous system. It calms your mind, reduces anxiety, and promotes a sense of grounding and stability. By anchoring your body to the earth, you create a sense of safety and security within yourself.
Thunderbolt pose is considered a grounding pose because you are sitting on the ground and more of your body is touching the ground than in other poses. Grounding poses are great for helping you calm down and focus.
How to Do Thunderbolt Pose at Work
Feeling stressed at your desk? You can do a variation of thunderbolt pose and nobody will know what you're doing.
If you have an office door you can close and that is more comfortable for you, then go ahead and do that. But even if you are in an open workspace, you can do this variation. Sit in your chair with your back straight and the crown of your head reaching toward the ceiling. You may need to sit forward on your chair to make sure you are sitting on your sits bones and not your sacrum.
Place your hands on your thighs (palms up or down). Close your eyes or simply lower your gaze and imagine your feet growing roots. Take slow breaths in and out through your nose for as long as you like. This quick break can do wonders for your focus and productivity.
Beyond the Mat: Integrating Thunderbolt Pose into Your Life
Thunderbolt Pose isn't just for your yoga mat. You can incorporate it into your daily routine in countless ways:
