Lately, it feels like everyone I talk to is going through something heavy. Whether it’s personal loss, collective grief, burnout, or just a lingering feeling of being stretched too thin, it’s clear—we’ve all been in survival mode in one way or another.
When I pulled cards for August, the messages were clear and gentle: Intuition. Connection. Fulfillment. Patience. And I couldn’t help but feel like those cards weren’t just for me. They were for all of us who’ve been doing our best to get through hard days with little energy left to tune in, care for ourselves, or even feel like ourselves.
If that’s where you’ve been lately, this is for you.
What Survival Mode Can Look Like
Survival mode doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s quiet and sneaky. That's how it was for me. It might feel like:
- You’re just going through the motions
- You stop doing the things that used to bring you joy
- You forget how to answer when someone asks what you want
- You feel tired even after sleeping
- You haven’t checked in with your intuition or creative spark in a while
And if that sounds like you, please hear this: There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. Your body and mind have just been doing their best to keep you going. But if you’re reading this, it might be time to shift from surviving to reconnecting.
The Cost of Disconnection
When we’ve been in survival mode for too long, disconnection sets in. We lose touch not just with others but with ourselves. That quiet voice of intuition becomes harder to hear. The things that used to light us up feel distant or irrelevant. It becomes harder to tell the difference between what we want and what we’re just tolerating.
For me, it looked like skipping my usual card pulls, not writing and drawing just for fun, and forgetting to ask myself what I needed. I didn’t realize how far away I’d drifted until I started to feel like a stranger in my own life.
Small Ways to Begin Again
The good news? Reconnection doesn’t require a big gesture. It starts with small, intentional moments. Here are a few that have helped me:
- Keep a one-line journal. Write down one thing that made you feel even a little bit like yourself each day. It might be, “The way the sunlight came through the window,” or “I laughed out loud at that weird meme.”
- Do something joyful with zero pressure. Doodle. Dance. Make pancakes for dinner. The goal isn’t to be productive—it’s to feel like you again.
- Pull a single card. No need to interpret it. Just sit with it. Let its energy wash over you without needing to “figure it out.”
- Step outside without your phone. Breathe. Look at the sky. Notice how the world keeps spinning gently, even when you feel stuck.
- Ask, “What do I need right now?” Then actually listen. The answer might surprise you.
You don’t need to do all of these. Even one is enough. These aren’t tasks to accomplish—they’re invitations to return to yourself.
Give It Time
If you’re not feeling totally “back” yet, that’s okay. The last card I pulled for August was Patience, and it couldn’t have been more fitting. Reconnection isn’t instant. It's not a switch—it’s more like a slow sunrise. A quiet unfolding.
You haven’t lost yourself. You’ve just been protecting yourself. And now, little by little, it's safe for you to come back.
A Gentle Prompt to Close
If you're ready, try journaling on one of these questions:
- Where have I been missing myself lately?
- What would it feel like to reconnect with who I am now—not who I used to be?
And if you’d rather just sit with an affirmation, here’s one from our Freeing the Butterfly deck:
“It’s safe to change.”
Because it is. And you’re doing beautifully.
